“You’re Never Too Old to Start Again”
Debbie has been part of the MEE-FIT community for more than six years.
But her story actually started much earlier than that.
Around 50 years ago, Debbie was a Shropshire athlete. She’d always been active. But like many people, life moved on. Fitness slipped down the priority list, and over time she noticed something change.
“I knew my fitness levels were not very good, and I needed to do something.”
The problem wasn’t motivation. It was the environment.
Debbie knew herself well enough to realise that a typical gym wouldn’t work.
“I wanted something more personal. If I joined a £20 or £30 a month gym, I probably wouldn’t bother going. I’d have to do my own thing.”
What she wanted instead was support. Coaching. Accountability.
And somewhere she actually enjoyed being.
That’s what she found at MEE-FIT.
Over the years Debbie hasn’t just built strength again — she’s built friendships too.
“We’ve got loads of new friends here. We have great fun as well as working out. There’s social events… there’s lots more going on than just coming to a gym.”
But the part that matters most to her is something many people worry about before joining a gym.
“What if I can’t do everything?”
Debbie has physical limitations that mean certain exercises aren’t right for her. And after undergoing major surgery for breast cancer, returning to exercise could easily have felt intimidating.
Instead, she found support.
“When I came back, the coaches would specifically change each exercise to suit me — what I could and couldn’t do."
The coaching team had also taken additional training to better support members dealing with injuries and health conditions. That meant Debbie never felt like she had to push through something unsafe — or step away entirely.
And that’s something she’s noticed about the wider community too.
“Most people walk away from a gym if they’re injured. My experience here is people come back despite their injury and work with it to try and get stronger and healthier again.”
It’s a small shift in thinking, but a powerful one.
Exercise doesn’t have to stop when life throws challenges your way.
With the right coaching and support, it can actually become part of the recovery.
Debbie has one simple message for anyone thinking about getting started.
“If you’re on the fence… get off it. Look for somewhere like MEE-FIT.”
Because the benefits don’t just show up in the gym.
“You’re going to get fitter. You’re going to get healthier. And as you get older… it can only have positive benefits for the future.”
Starting later doesn’t mean starting too late.
Sometimes it simply means starting smarter.
And as Debbie’s story shows, it can also mean finding a community that supports you every step of the way.
